A message from the director of ADMC
As part of ADMC’s celebration of 25 years of excellence in education, one initiative supported by the College will be helping a group of very poor children in Cambodia who are struggling to get an education.
As part of ADMC’s celebration of 25 years of excellence in education, one initiative supported by the College will be helping a group of very poor children in Cambodia who are struggling to get an education.
This
project is centered on a home for impoverished or orphaned children in Siem
Reap in Cambodia, in which children receive care, food, and education and the
local community benefits from training and work opportunities. The project is a
registered non-profit, UK-based charity which is extremely well-run by local and
international trustees. The particular focus of the fund-raising challenge is
to build a much-needed shelter, play and study area in the Honour Village
grounds for the three hundred children who now attend classes and to do so
before the coming rainy season.
The
fund-raising challenge has three aims:
- To increase our
students’ awareness of global issues such as poverty, development, the
results of conflict on civilians, aid, international relations and
citizenship.
- To improve student
skills of organization, planning, reporting, and accounting.
- To
provide experience and raise awareness of volunteering, in the student’s
own community and further afield.
We
would like to ask all general education teachers to introduce the project to
every section by using the attached documents, which include introductory
videos, discussion materials and fund-raising suggestions. While projects
should be student-driven, teachers should provide guidance, encourage
discussion of the issues involved, and allow time for related activities when
appropriate.
The
fund-raising challenge will take place over the next two weeks, with money
raised due to the Director’s desk collection box by 5pm on March 27th.
Participants
in the best fundraising groups will receive awards and certificates, and
outstanding participants will be flying to Cambodia with a mentor to meet the
children, see the building work in progress, and volunteer their time and
skills.
I
look forward to seeing many fun, out-of-the-box fundraising ideas, increasing
our students’ awareness of global issues and volunteering, and demonstrating
our appreciation for our own superb educational setting our as part of our
anniversary celebrations.
